Big Maybelle – The Complete Okeh Sessions 1952-55 (1994)
(this song is not included in the album but it is the only live performance I’ve found online)
ggg
Despite her short-lived career due to drug addiction and health problems, this amazing overlooked Jazz and R&B singer and once pianist, holds true to her position on the top of the list of my all-time favorite singers among Nina Simone, “Big Mama” Thornton, Dina Washington, Ella, Bessie, Aretha, Etta and Billie. Big Maybelle, whose name was given after she was signed by Okeh Records, was a huge influence to Aretha Franklin among others. At her best, she was so strong that Billie Holiday once refused to follow her opening act. She had hits such as “Gabbin Blues”, “Candy” and “96 Tears”. Although being a chartmaker, Maybelle was never able to achieve the stardom that her talent deserved.
